A pesky squirrel is getting into the feed I put out f or my wild birds, will a B.B. Gun put?

a stop to this? If I shoot the squirrel with a B.B. gun, what'll it do to the squirrel? I want him off my property!A pesky squirrel is getting into the feed I put out f or my wild birds, will a B.B. Gun put?
ahh yes, i have been in your alley quite a few times. I am getting quite good at sniping the little guys. (not for fun, they get in the bird feeder, our house, our attic, and traps don't work, i've still have one up in my attic and under the house that I bait frequently, and haven't caught one!) So, I put peanut butter on the edge of the bird feeder, lay in the bushes under my camo jacket and wait. And it is perfectly legal to shoot squirrels as ';pest control'; in my area, but I don't know about where you live. I suggest using a crossman marksman pellet gun. I have a scope with mine, and it works great! I can shoot at a distance too. Try to hit them in the head, or the eye area, otherwise you will only wound it, and he will die a slow and painful death. If you get him just right, he will be dead before he hit the ground! If you have a BB gun, it can work too. I have a winchester lever action bb gun, and I don't know the Feet per second on that, but it also does the trick, but you have to be closer with it. My pellet gun is 575 FPS, so it does good. But make sure you sight in your gun, otherwise you will end up shooting something valuable, and you won't be happy. And to the people who say that they have babies that will starve, I say the North america needs less grey squirrels, they are kind of like an invasive species.A pesky squirrel is getting into the feed I put out f or my wild birds, will a B.B. Gun put?
Unless you sit at the window all day long waiting for him, you are not likely to get a chance to shoot hiim. The method recommended by many garden books is to mix red pepper (cayanne) or red pepper flakes with the bird feed. It doesn't bother the birds at all but Mr. Squirrel will quickly get the message to get his food elsewhere. No harm to the birds (they don't even pay any attention to the red pepper) and no harm to the squirrel, he just goes away and looks elsewhere for food that doesn't burn his mouth and later his butt.
A bb gun (typically with a muzzle velocity of less than 400 fps) probably won't have enough energy to kill a squirrel. All it will likely do is hurt it. If you want to remove the squirrel permanently, you will need at least a pellet gun with a muzzle velocity around 1000 fps. That will (assuming you do your part and hit a vital area) kill the squirrel quickly.

Illustration of a squirrel being killed by a high-power airgun that I found on youtube (to prove the point): http://youtube.com/watch?v=r_8Vv530aww

If you don't live in an urban area and can set up a safe shot, a .22 LR or a .17 Mach2 would be a better choice since it has much more energy and would be far more likely to kill the squirrel instantly.
it depends on the BB gun. If its an airsoft gun, or a cheap copper BB gun, it might just hurt it, and make it run away, which is probably ideal. If its a pellet gun or a powerful copper bb gun, it might kill it before it falls out of the feeder. Unless you're a good shot, you'll probably miss and just scare it away for a little while. Worst case scenario, is that you injure it, and then it crawls underneath your deck/ house/ whatever to die. Check the specs and such of your bb gun. if it's a toy, it probably wont kill anything bigger than a small bird
No. You will just hurt it. And this time of year they have small babies - so best to leave mom or dad unharmed until the end of summer. Or you condem the babies to starving to death.

They do make squirrel proof feeders - lots of designes. There were even several shows in Great Britan dedicated to outsmarting squirrels.

If you cannot out smart it - then simply use a live catch trap, like a 'have a heart' and some peanut butter cups to catch it at the end of summer. Then take it for a long ride to a nice wooded area......... and keep a big freeway between the new area and your home. They also have an uncanny nack of finding their way back to where they were - and - you'll have the dickens trying to trap it a second time.

Hope this helps
It's best to use the red-pepper-in-the-birdfeed trick.

The B.B. gun may not have enough power to harvest the squirrel cleanly.

I have yet to see a truly ';squirrel proof'; bird feeder.

A determined squirrel will figure out how to access the food in a birdfeeder. It's only a matter of time.
Well, only if your a good enough shot. What kind of BB gun? my BB gun can kill small game. That squirrel is not going anywhere but back for more bird feed. I say kill the rodent. And I mean KILL. Don't wound the poor creature, Kill it. Nothing worse than the slow death of an animal(well, slow death to humans is worse).
A BB gun will only make it run off unless you鈥檙e a few feet from it. They do make squirrel proof bird feeders, an idea or put it on a pole away from trees with aluminum flashing wrapped around the pole so he cant climb it.

Or yet do as I do and set Claymores at 20 yard intervals, with mount twin M .50 machine guns to take them out! (:p lol!

Happyness is tree rat mist in the morning!
Buy wild bird feed that has pepper in it. It is specially made this way because the birds don't mind it, but squirrels hate it! I used it and had no problem after that. Please don't shoot the squirrel, it won't solve your problem. There will always be a new squirrell.
It depends on how powerful the bb it is. If not that powerful it will give a nice sting to the squirrel and most likely won't come back. If a powerful bb gun it will kill it and I can tell you for a fact it won't mess with the bird feeder.
well you shouldnt shoot him just pick him up and let him go and if ur scared get some1 else to do it and if he keeps coming back then find a way to block him from getting in and if that doesnt work then shoot away! (but i really dont suggest the shooting thing)
a bb gun or pellet gun?bb hard to kill the squirrel aim for the eye to penetrate to the brain.or go to an asian grocer and buy dried chilis[ much cheaper at asian stores] and mix with seed.birds have dry toungues so no hot.mammell have wet toungues so very hot
A B.B. gun in the body area will hurt him and send him running home to momma but probably not for good if it is a dumb squirrel. If you want him gone forever hit him in the head and it's night night for good.
try using hot pepper in the bird seed, then try using a ';super soaker'; type of toy water gun with soapy water, that should bother them now, then in the winter the soapy water will get down to their skin and they should freeze solid....
mildflower, aww sweety they have to eat too. If you hit it in the eye it could kill it ! Do you have a tree to put an ear of corn on ?
Probably will not kill the little tike, try the red pepper trick everyone else here told you, or if you must get rid of him, buy a live trap %26amp; relocate the little bugger..

Good Luck....
lead pellet at 1,000fps will take care of your ';problem';. squirrel tastes good on the bbq.

if you do not want to kill him, try soft air
Yes it should depending if it is strong enough and your state may let you kill them since they are rodents.
If you shoot it in the right spot, it will most likely die.
It will most likely kill it. If that is not your intention, then I suggest not shooting it.
what you should do is hang your birdfeed on a washing line and either side of the feed a plastic bottle.
You'll shoot your eye out, kid!
get some nuts for the squirls.
Why would you shoot a squirrel with a BB gun, thats cruel. Just hang your stupid bird feeder in a harder place for the squirrel to reach.
Don't shoot him with a B.B. gun. That's horrible. O_O.
